What is Career Exploration?

Manitoba hosted its first ever Career Exploration for people with disabilities, October 7-11, 2013, in celebration of Disability Employment Awareness Month. We were blown away by the number of applications we received. Thank you everyone!
In addition to the main events of Career Exploration 2013, these events were also available:
- City of Winnipeg Career Presentation for Career Exploration Week Participants on October 10th, 2013
- Ability Axis Employment Expo on October 23rd, 2013
- S.T.E.P. into Career Options with the Manitoba Government on October 29th, 2013
There are two main reasons for Career Exploration:
- To provide people with disabilities, mainly youth, an opportunity to meet with employers and learn more about career opportunities they are interested in pursuing
- To provide employers with an opportunity to learn about their potential future workers with disabilities who could demonstrate the ability to excel when employed in high performance organizations
Career exploration sessions will range from one to two hour face-to-face meetings to a full morning or afternoon and may include hands-on activities where applicable, informational interviews, tours of workplaces, and other activities at the employers’ discretion.

Who can participate in Career Exploration?
Participants with disabilities who are 16 years of age or older and either working with Vocational Counsellors in the marketAbilities Program or Supported Employment agencies, or students in Manitoba High Schools, who are eager to explore their career options in Manitoba are encouraged to consider Career Exploration for people with disabilities as one part of their overall career planning efforts.
Manitoba employers who are looking to tap into a largely underrepresented and under utilized labour market are also encouraged to consider hosting a career exploration session for one or more people with disabilities as part of their future workforce planning efforts.
Where is Career Exploration being held?
Career Exploration is being held in workplaces throughout Manitoba in celebration of Disability Employment Awareness Month.
Why is Manitoba having Career Exploration?
Besides giving people with disabilities an opportunity to explore career options with Manitoba employers and giving employers the opportunity to meet potential future workers Career Exploration Week will also help to build bridges by increasing familiarity and awareness of accessibility and disability issues, promote the business case for hiring, retaining and promoting people with disabilities across all workplace sectors, and provide options for addressing Manitoba’s current and future labour market challenges.
